Background

Hong Kong Opera Makers was founded by musicians Michael CT Lam and Anna Vienna Ho, dedicated to bringing diverse opera experiences to local audiences by blending Eastern and Western artistic elements. The organization's mission is to promote the art of opera, bridge the gap between opera and the public, and discover and cultivate new voices through workshops.

Over a decade ago, Lam and Ho began conceptualizing an opera based on the novel "Journey to the West" and enlisted friends to participate. However, due to limited resources at the time, they had to keep this idea to themselves. In 2020, while in the UK, they received strong support from the Tête à Tête opera festival and Roxanne Korda, a British soprano and founder of Infinite Opera, allowing them to officially create and prepare the project. They subsequently received support from the UK Arts Council and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, presenting three adaptations of "Journey to the West" at the UK's largest modern opera festival: Buddha and the Monkey King (2020), The Monk of the River (2021), and The Monster of Gao Village (2023), promoting cultural exchange and showcasing traditional Chinese music and culture, all of which received critical acclaim.

After settling back in Hong Kong, these musicians continued to develop their singing and performance careers while also promoting opera. In 2024, Lam served as the choir conductor at the Hong Kong International Institute of Music, taking on roles as artistic director and producer, as well as conducting, stage directing, vocal coaching, and scriptwriting in Cantonese. He led students in the famous one-act opera Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, marking the school's first opera production in its 36-year history. In addition to teaching the "Opera 101 - Michael Lam Opera Workshop," Lam, as artistic director, guided students in creating and performing the pasticcio Lost In The Opera. In 2025, the duo presented Barber's mini-opera A Hand of Bridge at a concert featuring students and faculty at the Hong Kong International Institute of Music, which was well-received by the audience.

To more effectively promote opera and vocal arts and bring them closer to the public, they decided to establish a group. Thus, Hong Kong Opera Makers was born in 2025.

Our vision is to blend Eastern and Western art forms, creating a distinctive artistic experience that captivates and engages our audience.

We prioritize multicultural integration and are dedicated to delivering high-quality opera performances. Additionally, we strive to create opportunities for local emerging talent through our training workshops.
